M1 Sniper Rifle
Reproduction scopes and mounts are on the market again so you too can have a classic M1 Sniper rifle. The side detachable scope mount is sturdy and the scope is more clear than the originals. They are running around 700.00 for the scope and mount.
Side Mounting service runs $350
.
Mounting a scope on the side of an M1 takes special equipment, it is not the same thing as scoping a standard hunting bolt action. Once the rifle is lined up by the barrel with a mill table, the side mounting holes can be drilled. The M1 Garand however is a rock hard receiver and the treatment runs throughout, making it necessary to use special carbide drill bits and taps. Many rifle receivers are case hardened, which means once you scrape off the outer case of hardened steel the holes can be drill with standard bits. This is not the case with most M1s, they are hard all the way through. This mount has five holes 2 of which are tapered pins and 3 screws. The pins assure that the mount cant shift under recoil.
The leather cheek pad helps line your head up with the offset scope. Left handed shooters will be pleased to know that you can still shoot this as a lefty, by simply cocking the rifle. In my experience even right handed shooters might be more comfortable shooting from the left especially if you cant locate a leather cheek piece.
